A new police agreement with Germany will ensure drastic penalties in the Alpine country from May. If you exceed the speed limit significantly, you could face fines, imprisonment or the withdrawal of your vehicle or driving license. A maximum speed of 120 kilometers per hour is permitted on Swiss motorways, outside of urban areas the limit is 80 and 50 km/h in urban areas. On mountain roads, the vehicle traveling uphill has the right of way.
