Knife attack in Bas-Rhin: the parents of the schoolgirl who died after feeling unwell file a complaint

An investigation has been opened to determine the conditions under which the 14-year-old girl suffered a cardiac arrest while at school.


The parents of the schoolgirl who died after feeling unwell near Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin) have filed a complaint for involuntary manslaughter, we learned from a source close to the case. This complaint must be investigated to determine the conditions in which the young girl died.

The family filed a complaint Friday afternoon with a gendarmerie brigade. The investigation was entrusted to the Strasbourg research section which is also in charge of the investigation into the two attacked schoolgirls.

A procedure has been opened to determine the causes of this cardiac arrest, a judicial source said on Friday. An autopsy and further examinations were ordered.

Madeline, a 14-year-old teenager, felt unwell on Thursday during confinement at her school in Souffelweyersheim, alongside the attack on two little girls. His death caused great emotion within the educational community and families. The college will be open this Monday, the first day of the school holidays, to offer a welcome and a listening service to families who request it.

“A very stressful episode”

Thursday afternoon, an alert was launched by the director of the town's primary school after two schoolgirls were attacked with a knife outside the establishment by an individual with a psychiatric history. In addition to the school, a college a few dozen meters away had been confined.

“We have implemented the containment procedure. The teachers did it in an extremely precise and rigorous manner and unfortunately this schoolgirl experienced an episode of very strong stress which resulted in this cardiac arrest,” indicated the rector.

When the alert was given, the classes closed their doors and the students hid under the tables. The young girl “had been rescued by teachers who very quickly called the fire services,” the academy rector, Olivier Faron, explained to AFP. The perpetrator of the knife attack did not enter any school.

A listening service at college on Monday

A second investigation into “attempted intentional homicide of minors aged 15 (and rebellion)” was opened after the attack on the two girls. They were slightly injured and quickly left the hospital, according to the Strasbourg public prosecutor's office.

The man suspected of stabbing two children was referred Friday for indictment for “attempted intentional homicide of 15-year-old minors,” Yolande Renzi, prosecutor of the district, said Friday evening. Republic of Strasbourg, specifying that his placement in pre-trial detention had been requested.

The judicial investigation targeting him was also opened for “intentional violence against a soldier of the gendarmerie (without ITT)”, added the magistrate. According to a judicial source, this 30-year-old man had hit the soldier during his search at the gendarmerie brigade where he was taken after being arrested.
