Car won't start: These can be the reason

Highlights: Cars often don't start because of dead batteries. However, sometimes another component is to blame. The alternator is one of many possibilities. An interrupted circuit due to problems with the cables could be the trigger. A puddle under the car can indicate an unwelcome visitor. If the tank is still full, the fuel system may be the cause. In older vehicles, “defective wearing parts, such as starter motors or ailing spark plugs, can also make starting difficult or impossible,” explains the German automobile club ADAC. The problem also caused most of the ADAC’s missions in 2023. It is possible that blockages in the fuel filter or fuel line, failure of the injection pump and malfunctions in various sensors are to blame for car problems. Cars often don't start because of dead batteries. However, sometimes another component is to blame. The alternator is one of many possibilities.

A breakdown is always inconvenient. So it's logical that the car won't start whenever you're in a hurry. The trigger is usually found quickly: an empty or weak battery. This problem also caused most of the ADAC's missions in 2023. Often the only thing that helps to get the engine running is jump starting assistance. But the cause can also lie somewhere else.

Battery symbol indicates defective alternator

If the battery is empty more often, this may indicate a problem with the alternator. This means that the battery is not charged while driving. This can be recognized by the fact that it is constantly glowing

Battery symbol. Normally, like all other indicator lights, this goes out again after starting.

But there is also good news, as the

emphasizes: “Sometimes the problem is limited and only the alternator drive belt needs to be replaced.”

Starting problems despite a full battery: Are the cables loose?

But what if the battery is full and the engine still doesn't start? According to the automobile club, an interrupted circuit due to problems with the cables could be the trigger. There can be different reasons for this:

  • Corrosion: In cars, the steel body is used as a negative line. Components such as the battery or alternator are also connected there. If rust forms at this seam, the flow of electricity may be interrupted. This in turn can lead to starting problems.

  • Loose cables: Especially in older vehicles, it often happens that screw connections of cables become loose and the power supply is interrupted.

  • Marten bite: The rodents are anything but a welcome guest. Nevertheless, they feel comfortable in the engine compartment and nibble on hoses, cables and insulating material. This can damage relevant components, which in turn can lead to ignition problems. The components must then be replaced.

Car won't start: Fuel system may be a problem

In addition to electricity, fuel is also required for the car to start. However, when attempting to start, it may not reach the engine. The causes can be different:

  • Empty tank: Annoying, but not uncommon. The reason doesn't necessarily have to be that you forgot to refuel. The marten doesn't stop at fuel lines either. A puddle under the car can indicate an unwelcome visitor.

  • If the tank is still full, the fuel system may be the cause. The following are possible: blockages in the fuel filter or fuel line, failure of the injection pump and malfunctions in various sensors. A visit to the workshop is usually the only option here.

However, there are numerous other triggers for the starting problems, which is why remote diagnosis is difficult. In older vehicles, “defective wearing parts, such as starter motors or ailing spark plugs, can also make starting difficult or impossible,” explains the
