Marc Guillaume, the prefect of the Île-de-France region, reacted strongly on Monday morning to Franceinfo, regarding the investigation by the NGO Surfrider Foundation. The latter had just launched an “open letter to the stakeholders involved in the organization of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and the 2025 swimming plan”. According to her, the water quality of the Seine was unsuitable for swimming between September 2023 and March 2024, according to several surveys carried out in Paris, near the Alexandre-III bridge and the Alma bridge. For thirteen of the fourteen samples, the concentrations of bacteria (
E. coli
and enterococci) which could be responsible for digestive or skin problems for swimmers were higher than the thresholds recommended by health authorities or sports federations.
But the regional prefect points out that in autumn and winter, swimming is prohibited in the Seine: precipitation and water…
