The solar eclipse live (Reuters)
LIVE
Tonight (Monday, Israel time), a spectacular astronomical event will take place: a total solar eclipse.
During the eclipse, the moon will completely hide the sun in North America - in areas of Mexico, the United States and Canada - allowing people to see stars in the sky even in the middle of the day. At 20:40 (Israel time) the eclipse will begin (ie partial coverage), the peak between 21:40 and 21:44 (full coverage).
This is an unusual astronomical event - the last total solar eclipse in North America was on August 21, 2017, and the next one will not occur until 2044. The path of the total eclipse, the point at which the moon will completely cover the sun, is expected to cross an area with a population of over 30 million people in the US, Canada and Mexico.
Those lucky enough to find themselves in the path of the total eclipse may see the Sun's corona and a phenomenon known as the "diamond ring" - two spectacular sights. Other areas will experience a partial eclipse, the intensity of which will vary depending on the proximity to the total eclipse. Watching the moon "eat" the sun, even partially, is still a spectacular sight.
A solar eclipse happens when the moon orbiting the earth comes between our globe and the sun, thus hiding it. The moon prevents the sun's rays from reaching the earth and thus casts a shadow, and from the point of view of the inhabitants of the earth, the light of the sun is hidden by the moon - which creates the unique appearance.
