The number of new registrations of electric cars continues to fall. Even in March 2024, the electricians will remain the problem child. Combustion engines continue to be at the top.

Electric car sales continue to weaken. With the end of the environmental bonus funding in December 2023, the decline in e-mobility began. The falling numbers of new registrations have already led to pessimistic future prospects in the automotive industry. Now the trend seems to be continuing. At least there was a significant drop in sales figures in March, as the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) announced.

The proportion of electric vehicles remains low: the e-car boom is slowing

Around 31,400 electric cars were newly registered in March 2024, the KBA announced. That is around 29 percent less than in March of the previous year. The share of electric cars in all new registrations was just under 12 percent. This is also a decrease compared to the same month last year. At that time, electric vehicles accounted for almost 16 percent of all new registrations.

Electric cars are still in crisis. A small ray of hope: there was at least an upward trend in March. The number of new registrations has increased slightly compared to the previous month. In February 2024 there were still around 27,500 new electric cars on Germany's roads. Audi boss Gernot Döllner also recently stated that the future of cars is clearly electric.

New registrations in March: combustion engines still at the top

The majority of new car buyers continue to rely on classic petrol engines. Despite a decrease of 3.4 percent compared to the same month last year, they account for the largest share of new registrations with a share of 37.8 percent. This is followed by hybrids with a share of 31.5 percent and a decrease of 1.2 percent compared to the same month last year. 18.3 percent of all new car buyers still rely on diesel. The

ADAC

notes that new vehicles are increasingly considered mild hybrids and are therefore no longer listed in statistics as pure diesel or gasoline engines, but as hybrids.

Sales figures are falling: the problem child is the electric car

The federal government's goal of having 15 million electric cars on German roads by 2030 is unlikely to be achieved. Hildegard Müller, Managing Director of the Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), sees the reason for this in the general conditions. In an interview with the

Ostfriesischer Kurier,

she complains about the slow pace of expansion of the charging infrastructure. The power grids also need to be made fit for the future. The high electricity prices must not become a brake, says Müller. Potential customers may also be put off by high repair costs for electric cars, as well as high depreciation on used electric cars.

Passenger car inventory March 2024: Fewer new registrations than in the previous year

In total, the KBA recorded 263,884 new car registrations in Germany in March 2024. Compared to the same month last year, this is a decrease of 6.2 percent. In addition, average CO₂ emissions increased by 3.1 percent and amounted to 124.4 g/km. When all motor vehicles are added together, including trucks and buses, there were 333,483 vehicles put into circulation for the first time. That is around 6 percent less than in the previous year.
