With the purely electric SUV E-3008, Peugeot wants to achieve ranges of over 700 kilometers. That has its price. Nothing works for less than 50,000 euros.

With the new Peugeot it's a bit like the tongue-in-cheek saying of the famous Bavarian comedian Karl Valentin: "I would have wanted to like it, but I didn't dare." The liking and wanting can be seen from the outside of the electric SUV at. We'll come back to what's allowed and not trusting later. Rarely has a Peugeot stood on the road as splendidly as the E-3008. At the front is the confident front with the Star Wars slats in the body color, at the back is the crisp rear with the striking wing spoiler on the roof. The E-3008 makes a huge impression. Even more so in the GT version, because then the three-claw daytime running lights sparkle with matrix headlights. As a noble contrast, Peugeot offers the paneling in the mysteriously shimmering “Glossy Black”. You can also tell in the interior that the E-3008 wants to impress. The 21-inch (approx. 53 centimeters) combination display floats on the dashboard. At night, this “floating effect” is further enhanced by the ambient light, which is reflected from an aluminum strip.

Getting in and seating comfort: The Peugeot E-3008 in a practical check

Top marks for the design – but how does the E-3008 fare in the practical test? When getting in at the back, a normal-sized person has to squirm quite a bit to get into the rear. Put your foot in, put weight on your supporting leg, tilt your head, park your back, pull your supporting leg along. It sounds uncomfortable, and it is. Basically, with a length of 4.54 meters and a wheelbase of 2.74 meters, the car should offer enough space - but the space in the rear seats is a bit tight. With 520 to 1,480 liters, the trunk offers plenty of space and thus competes with the company's own E-308 electric station wagon. It's funny the idea that you can adjust the false floor at an angle with just one move. Helps prevent luggage from falling over corners – really practical.

The same can be said about the operation of the on-board computer. The structure is logical and the system is very fast. For functions that you need frequently, there is a rail that you can use yourself. For example, to switch off the most annoying pair of assistants that the EU regulators in Brussels have ever invented: the speed warning, which starts at 1 km/h, or the electronic lane keeping function. Otherwise, everything an electric car needs is included - including digital charging management for longer journeys. And don't forget: The E-3008's voice system also works with ChatGPT's artificial intelligence.

From 210 to 320 hp – that’s how powerful the electric lion is

Up to this point the E-3008 really cuts a good figure. But how powerful is the electric car really when it comes to the nitty-gritty? About the range, and therefore the consumption and the charging speed. Two battery sizes can be accommodated in the chassis. 73 or 98 kWh for ranges from 527 kilometers to over 700 km. When it comes to engines, the customer can choose between a variant with front-wheel drive, 210 hp and a small battery or with 230 hp and a large battery. Then there is an all-wheel drive model, it has a second engine on the rear axle and 320 hp. To do this, you have to do without the large battery and around 50 liters of trunk space.

We had the lowest performance level in the test: The 2.1-ton SUV is sufficiently motorized, but the fun factor is almost a bit short. This also applies to the chassis, which has a hard time fighting with itself and struggling to keep the abundant pounds from spreading in all directions. The steering reacts too easily in normal mode and too heavy in the sport position. A little fine-tuning could help. And the suspension comfort is also more likely to find its fans among sporty drivers, it is very close to the limit. All of this is criticism at a high level - challenged by the bold, progressive design that promises something more. This is where Valentine comes into play again. He would have wanted to, but he didn't dare to. But what is not yet can still become. For example with the all-wheel drive model. There's nothing to complain about about the turning circle: the E-3008 doesn't turn on the proverbial beer mat, but at 10.5 meters it's already pretty far ahead.

Battery and charging speed - goodbye long distances!

What about range and charging speed? Peugeot promises a lot here, namely over 500 or 700 kilometers - and therefore about as much as the Kia EV9. The French treat the subject more honestly than almost any other manufacturer. You have to subtract 20 percent of the range if you want to conserve the battery by charging it to 80 percent. With 500 kilometers, that's just 400 kilometers in purely mathematical terms. Another ten percent is lost because you are at the charging station with this ten percent remaining range at the latest. That's 360 kilometers. And if you then calculate a 30 to 40 percent loss at speeds of over 110 km/h or more, then you have to say: Goodbye long distances. The loading speed is all the more important. Here the brand with the lion in its logo relies on a 400-volt system. There is an 11 kW charger (22 kW optional) for AC and a 150 kW charger for DC. This means that the battery can be charged from 20 to 80 percent in seven hours on the wallbox at home with the maximum possible 7.4 kW; on the fast charger it takes 30 minutes.

Our conclusion about the new Peugeot E-3008 Electric

The E-3008 is a really nice car with cool styling that has slight weaknesses in the chassis and average charging performance. Peugeot does not hide the fact that the reality of the range is different than the seductive WLTP values promise, but rather communicates it aggressively. Big compliment! But you have to be able to afford a piece of jewelry like the E-3008. Just under 50,000 euros in the basic version, then around 53,500 euros in the GT version. You have to want to like it and be able to trust yourself. But as we all know, beauty has always had its price.
