FC Bayern is betting everything on the Champions League. But Michael Ballack believes that the team has little chance - and explains the reason.

Michael Ballack takes FC Bayern stars to task
For the 47-year-old, the problems didn't just start with the signing of coach Thomas Tuchel. “We could already see corresponding tendencies and dissatisfaction in the club under Julian Nagelsmann,” he said in an interview with

He sees the reason for FC Bayern's current low performance primarily in the players. “I believe that a certain saturation process has set in among the players and that the self-image for self-motivation is no longer there as it was perhaps in this successful Corona year of 2020. On paper, Bayern have a very good squad this season, so you have to ask yourself: Why are performances like those against Dortmund possible?”

“A few things slipped”: Michael Ballack becomes clear
Ballack can then answer the question himself. As a former Bayern player, he knows “how great the demands are when it comes to team composition.” The topic of salary is also important for the question of where a player sees himself financially and hierarchically. “If I just take the story with Alphonso Davies and his alleged salary expectations as an example: something like that obviously does something to a team,” he said in an interview with Kicker

“A few things have slipped” at FC Bayern in recent years – those responsible now have to “pull the trigger” to get the “hunger” back. The question of hierarchy and salary structure must also be addressed in order to maintain “clean stability,” as Ballack called it. “You have to approach the squad,” he concluded.

Many FC Bayern stars are playing on probation
Sports director Max Eberl made similar comments when he took office at the beginning of March. Almost all players are on probation. “I don’t want to give a number, but we will look at who will join in and give Bayern Munich this heart and soul to perhaps achieve our goals,” said Eberl at the time. Anyone who lacks the virtues of “character and mentality” that are urgently needed when rebuilding can leave – old status or not.
After the 2-0 defeat against Borussia Dortmund, Eberl became clear again. “You can of course throw out the next coach and say, again the next coach and again the next coach. But it’s the boys on the pitch who have to stand there and perform,” he said.
