At the end there was praise from the association president: At the Bavarian championship in Ingolstadt, the epee fencers from TSV Weilheim showed strong performances.
Ingolstadt
– If you want to be at the top of a national tournament as a fencer, you “have to be good,” says Wolfgang Reuthner, trainer and department head at TSV Weilheim.
In this type of weapon, the performance density is high and the starting fields are usually larger compared to foil and saber. Seen this way, the Weilheim fencers were really very good at the Bavarian Championships in Ingolstadt. The TSV athletes won seven medals – only TV Augsburg was similarly successful.
TSV Weilheim wins many medals at the Bavarian championship
Birgit Anzenberger, President of the Bavarian Fencing Association (BFV), praised Reuthner. She pointed out that the people of Weilheim are now
doing as well with the sword as they did with the saber
. In previous years
, TSV
was at the forefront in Bavaria
. Shortly before the corona pandemic, the division changed the type of weapon and switched to the sword.
The competition with this 110 centimeter long shock weapon “is most similar to the classic duel,” explains Reuthner. The hit area is the entire body, not just the torso (without arms and head) like with foil. There is no explicit right to attack (applies to foil/saber). In order for a hit to be counted, it must be pressed with at least 750 grams (around 7.36 Newtons). Battles are tactically completely different from the other genres.
TSV coach “super satisfied” with the result
Reuthner was “super-satisfied” with the results in Ingolstadt, as he said. One of his protégés, who was expected well in advance, was Xaver Schießler (born 2011). In the U13 class he leads the Bavarian rankings, and in Ingolstadt he didn't let any of the eleven other competitors get past him. At the German championship (in June in Bad Nauheim), the division hopes that a place in the top ten would be the goal.

Reuthner also confirmed that Johannes Birkner (born 2010) had a very strong performance. He belongs to the younger age group of the U15 boys. Usually they first have to pay a lesson to the older ones. But Birkner fought bravely through the tournament and won the silver medal. In the final, Franz Reineke (born 2009) from SSV Ettal was too strong. Reineke is number one in the rankings, Birkner is in ninth place.

The appearance of Mariia Yevdokymova (born 2003) on the first day of the competition was also notable. The TSV fencer, who comes from Ukraine, had a difficult time in the women's preliminary round. You only managed two wins in the five-goal duels. In the knockout phase - 15 goals were needed to win - Yevdokymova turned up the heat, won victory after victory and in the end even won gold in the field of 27 starters.

The Weilheimer team achieved two podium places in the U17 class. In the women's category, Tizia Klauser (born 2007) was awarded silver “after an exciting final battle,” as it says in a statement. In the competition comprising 19 starters, only Clara Friedemann (MTV Munich) was better. Jakob Gilg (born 2007) won the bronze medal among the U17 boys.
Very large starting fields in some age groups
The smallest field – with four participants – was among the U11 girls. Kim Nowak won the title there, Aurelia Nett won bronze. There were 50 entries for the men's senior class. Sebastian Wohl (born 1997) and Clemens Zarubin (born 2001) took places 38 and 40.

Speaking of seniors: By switching to the epee, significantly more adults attend the Weilheim fencing training than in the saber days, reported Reuthner. Around 40 athletes come to the practice sessions, which take place in the Hardtschule (Mondays) and in the TSV club center (Fridays). There are also dates for so-called individual lessons.
