The 2024 European Championship is just around the corner. While the German jersey is usually celebrated, Austria's new shirt design is causing a lot of bad mood in the neighboring country.

Vienna – The European Championships in Germany 2024 are getting closer and closer. And the new jersey designs are once again a topic of conversation. In Germany, the pink away jersey in particular caused a stir, but was also combined with an ironic advertising campaign by the supplier Adidas, which was “typically German”.

EM 2024: Jersey discussions in Germany and Austria

After the two wins against France and the Netherlands and a resurgent Toni Kroos, the anticipation for the tournament is increasing. And the euphoria is also growing in neighboring Austria - they are considered something of a secret favorite at the European Championships. But unlike in Germany, the new jerseys for the tournament in Austria are causing a lot of trouble among the fans.

The Austrians' new jersey comes from the German sporting goods manufacturer Puma and, according to the Austrian Football Association's website, is intended to "perfectly combine tradition and modernity".

Austria jersey with “artful graphics” is mercilessly rejected by fans

According to the manufacturer, the red and white home jersey is “inspired by the delicate beauty of Austrian Art Nouveau architecture. Artfully designed graphics are combined with proud details.” The away jersey uses white as well as gray and bright turquoise accents. “These are an allusion to the graphic reinterpretation of the eagle and its wings and represent the nation’s affinity for nature and adventure,” says the ÖFB. The shirt is intended to be “a symbol of belonging, passion and support.”

Was this really successful with this design? The reactions are at least extremely divided. While some fans celebrate the new jersey as “snazzy” on social media, it is mostly criticized. “What were you thinking? Nothing, right?” writes a fan under the association’s Instagram post about the new jersey.

Austria jersey is completely dismantled by fans: “An impudence”

Several design decisions are the focus of criticism:

On the one hand, the redesigned eagle logo continues to cause trouble. This isn't entirely new, but apparently it still hasn't reached the hearts of fans. “The logo is an impudence in my eyes. "As before," says one fan. Another writes: "It's nicer than the last one (jersey, editor), but I'm still in favor of changing the jersey manufacturer and back to the nice one “To put an eagle, which we were allowed to wear on our chests in 2016, I just find this ÖFB logo ugly.”

On the other hand, the choice of color alone triggers angry protests: “White/black are Austria's team colors, whoever could have changed that (I think Krankl out of ignorance) is so wrong about it,” explains one fan. The pattern is also a concern on the jersey for big question marks: “What’s the pattern?” ÖBB route network?”

The comments under the association's posts on Instagram and Twitter increasingly read like a reckoning:

  • I've waited so long for the new jersey, but I'm not buying it straight away. 12 year old has better design ideas

  • Any AI generated jersey would probably be hotter. A European Championship in the neighboring country, with a great team and a lot of potential and then a jersey like that. What a shame, Puma disappoints again.

  • What is the concept? I don't recognize that!?

  • That's almost a crime

  • Terrible, who would buy something like that?

  • Did the toddler come up with the pattern from the Puma designer?

  • Does the guy still have a job that gave his OK?

Many Austrians are apparently not at all satisfied with the new design and are even calling for a change of supplier. Looking at the German jersey in particular hurts some people: “Nothing creative about it, take Germany as an example. They brought a great jersey,” says one.

However, a look at the World Cup jerseys of the German national team since 1934 shows that jersey designs change significantly over the years.
