The German women's national team needs a new vice-captain.

Svenja Huth surprisingly ends her DFB career.

Wolfsburg - This resignation means a major weakening for the offensive of the German women's national soccer team: Svenja Huth is ending her career in the DFB team after 88 appearances and surprisingly resigns.

Around four months before the start of the Olympic Games, for which the DFB women qualified at the last minute, coach Horst Hrubesch now has to look for a new vice-captain.

Vice-captain Svenja Huth ends her DFB career

“I look back on my 18 years as a national player with pride and humility.

A time in which I learned an incredible amount and through victories, defeats, successes and setbacks I matured into the person I am today,” the 33-year-old announced on Sunday.

“I’m happy that I was able to do my part to get my ticket to the Olympics.”

After she had already played in the DFB's U-national teams, Huth celebrated her DFB debut in October 2011 and contributed a total of 14 goals for the national team.

In 2013 she became European champion and in 2016 she won Olympic gold with the DFB team.

Huth was considered a leader and an unpretentious team player.

Until the end she was mostly in the starting eleven for the DFB women - but now her strength is waning.

“Physically and mentally challenging”: Huth explains DFB resignation

“I subordinated everything to football – my passion – and always gave it my all.

But it was also a time that was both physically and mentally challenging and exhausting,” says Huth, explaining her reasons for stepping down.

That's why she "came to the decision to end my path in the national team."

From now on, “the sporting focus should only be on VfL Wolfsburg”.

Huth has been under contract with the She-Wolves since 2019.

She is looking forward to “the tasks in the club” and “a little more time at home with my family”.

Since last fall, Huth has also been a mother in addition to her full-time job as a professional soccer player.

Her wife Laura gave birth to their son Emil in September.

She dealt with the topics of artificial insemination, egg donation and stepchild adoption in a refreshingly open manner.

Hrubesch and Künzer praise Huth: “A great role model for many”

Current national coach Horst Hrubesch, who will be replaced by Christian Wück in the summer, was full of praise for Huth after the resignation announcement: “Svenja Huth's contributions to women's football and the women's national team are huge.

“She has given a lot to our team with what she brings to the table as a footballer, with her attitude and her impact on her teammates,” says Hrubesch.

He “really enjoyed working with her, also because she has strong opinions.”

DFB sports director Nia Künzer will also miss Huth with the national team.

“As a national player and personality, she was always a great role model for many,” explains Künzer.

“She will remain that way even after she leaves the DFB selection.

We will miss her – as a player and as a person.”
