Frankfurt – DAZN, Sky, Sat1 – the TV rights for the Bundesliga are once again held by various broadcasters and streaming platforms this season.

The German Football League (DFL) has presented a new tender model for the seasons from 2025/2026 to 2028/2028.

The private broadcaster RTL expresses its interest in broadcasting Bundesliga games.

RTL expresses interest in TV rights for the Bundesliga

“We look at everything that comes onto the market in terms of sports rights - of course also the Bundesliga rights,” said RTL boss Thomas Rabe regarding the possible acquisition of media rights for the Bundesliga.

However, it is not yet clear whether and how the television company wants to proceed.

The broadcaster has not yet made a final decision.

Nevertheless, the broadcast of sporting events is important for the private broadcaster.

“Sports rights play a big role for us,” said the head of the broadcasting group.

“This applies to both RTL, i.e. linear TV, and RTL+.” However, Rabe did not want to reveal exactly what form of reporting he was interested in.

RTL has not yet broadcast any Bundesliga

If RTL really wins the Bundesliga rights, there would be another channel added to the broadcasts for Bundesliga fans in the season after next.

The private broadcaster currently has no rights for the top German league.

However, the broadcasting group shows games of the national soccer team and also has rights for the Europa League and the Conference League.

Lothar Matthäus is regularly available to RTL as an expert.

RTL has also acquired sub-licenses from Telekom for twelve home European Championship games.

So far, RTL has shown, among other things, the games of the German national team.

DFL with new tender model

The DFL recently presented a new tender model that includes some drastic changes to previous tenders.

Among other things, the ban on single-occupancy, also known as the no-single-buyer rule, ends.

This regulation stated that no single pay-TV provider was allowed to secure all live rights, but rather that these must be divided between at least two.

From the 2025/2026 season onwards, a single broadcaster could now acquire the complete pay-TV rights.

The new tender model could also mean that the Bundesliga summary on free TV, which can first be seen on Saturdays from 6.30 p.m. on the ARD Sportschau, could be pushed back further in time.

The Federal Cartel Office finally approved the DFL's new tender model at the end of February.

Most recently, those interested in the TV rights for the 2025/26 to 2028/29 seasons were sent the documents.

The actual auction is scheduled to take place in mid-April.
