Jul concert: what is the “unfalsifiable QR code” which will allow entry to the Stade de France?

2024-04-19T20:15:22.581Z

Highlights: Stade de France is relying on "a dynamic and tamper-proof QR code. The ticket, secured on the blockchain, will be displayed exclusively on the Stade de France Tickets application. It is impossible to resell the same entry ticket to several people, unlike tickets in PDF format, which can be infinitely reproduced. In October 2022, more than 200 Orelsan fans, victims of this fraud, were unable to attend the rapper's concert at the Zénith in Caen. For those who will go and sing "Organized Band" at the top of their lungs, there is still a matter of not having a battery failure in front of the stadium porticos. The secure mobile ticket takes the form of a QR code which changes at regular intervals (for example, every minute). You must then have it scanned at the entrance to the stadium to prove that it is authentic. The system only allows one or two transfers to another phone. This makes scams more difficult.

To fight against the black market, certain concert events now require you to present a QR code on your smartphone that changes at any time.

On Wednesday, around a million people tried to get a place for rapper Jul's concert event at the Stade de France, scheduled for April 2025, as well as for another date at the Vélodrome stadium in Marseille. Ten minutes later, tickets for these shows were resold for almost €500 each on Leboncoin, compared to a maximum of 100 euros at the official price for the Carré Or zone.

To combat these dishonest resales, Stade de France is once again relying on “a dynamic

and tamper-proof QR code”.

This ticket, secured on the blockchain, will be displayed exclusively on the Stade de France Tickets application. Please note, this system only concerns fans who purchased their ticket from the Stade de France ticket office.

Blockchain is a ledger that maintains the history of a file with a unique identifier, for example, 25KLO. The system then knows that the 25KLO ticket passed from the Stade de France site to the smartphone of person A. Then, if the latter was transferred to person B.

This system only allows one or two transfers to another phone. This makes scams more difficult. It is in fact impossible to resell the same entry ticket to several people, unlike tickets in PDF format, which can be infinitely reproduced. In October 2022, more than 200 Orelsan fans, victims of this fraud, were unable to attend the rapper's concert at the Zénith in Caen.

Complicated resales

The secure mobile ticket takes the form of a QR code which changes at regular intervals (for example, every minute). It is impossible to print, and no screenshots can be taken. You must then have it scanned at the entrance to the stadium to prove that it is authentic. For those who will go and sing “Organized Band” at the top of their lungs, there is still a matter of not having a battery failure in front of the stadium porticos.

Above all, this ticket only appears on the spectator's phone two to three days before the show, and sometimes even only two hours before the start of the show.

The procedure to collect the ticket is simple. A few days before the concert, the buyer will receive an email from Stade de France inviting them to download the Stade de France Tickets application. He should create an account there with the same email address as the one with which he paid for his entry ticket.

It is with the company Secutix that the official Stade de France application collaborates to secure tickets via the blockchain. But this security system does not only have advantages. In particular, it complicates honest resale

“hand to hand”

between individuals, because the QR code is received at the very last minute. Not very practical for events where tickets have been purchased more than a year in advance, as is the case for these Jul concerts.

For the moment, the Stade de France has clarified that resales of tickets for the Marseille rapper's concert were

"not offered"

. Conversely, the Ticket Master platform will soon open a “Ticket Exchange” for Parisian and Marseille concerts.
