The people of Hohenpeißenberg had to go without their ice cream parlor for almost two years. Now the end of the ice cream parlor-free period is in sight: the master confectioner and patisière Maria Waffler is opening her “Café Eis-Waffler” in Schächen on Saturday – and in doing so is not only fulfilling a dream for herself.

Hohenpeißenberg

- When the ice cream parlor in Schächen in Hohenpeißenberg opened for the last time on May 13, 2022, no one could have guessed that it would close again about a month later due to water damage. The water damage was repaired at the beginning of 2023, but then the tenant at the time announced that he did not want to reopen.

The community, which owns the business premises in the Schächen building, started looking for new operators for the butcher shop, bakery and ice cream parlor. At the end of March last year, a new tenant was found for the butcher shop, the Pschorr family, but the ice cream parlor remained the problem child of the community. At least an ice machine was set up for the transition. That was at least something, but the people of Hohenpeißenberg missed their ice cream parlor sorely. There were repeated questions from the local council, the town hall and also from Mayor Thomas Dorsch. Now the end of the time without an ice cream parlor is in sight: Maria Waffler, who is a trained master confectioner and patissère, is opening her ice cream parlor next Saturday, April 20th, at 2 p.m., which she has given the appropriate name “Café Eis-Waffler”.

Without artificial additives

“I’m happy to finally be able to offer my things,” says Maria Waffler. Because she is convinced of what she does and her products: “I really stand by my things and am happy when people like them.” The 32-year-old pays attention to quality. The ice cream that she sells in the “Café Eis-Waffler” is made without artificial additives. Things like colors and flavors have no place in their ice cream. “My ice cream is really good,” she enthuses.

She wants to offer 16 flavors of ice cream at the opening - especially the classics such as vanilla and chocolate will be found in the ice cream counter on Saturday. Ice cream sundaes are also offered, turning the street sales into a real ice cream parlor. Every single variety is produced by Maria Waffler and her friend Markus Lechner, who is a trained chef, in Hohenpeißenberg itself: “We have set up a production room,” says Hohenpeißenberg mayor Thomas Dorsch. This is located opposite the town hall - so very close to the ice cream parlor.

Ice cream laboratory and bakery nearby

The production facility is both an ice cream laboratory and a bakery, because master confectioner Maria Waffler also wants to offer homemade cakes. There should be four different cakes every day, she says. Like every café, she also serves drinks and coffee. “It was always the goal that the butcher shop and the ice cream parlor were open again,” says Dorsch. The combination was particularly well received by the people of Hohenpeißenberg. "It's a Dream."

The opening of the “Eis-Waffler” is a dream come true not only for the mayor, but also for Maria Waffler. The 32-year-old started studying after graduating from high school and also worked in the catering industry. “That’s when I realized that I was much more interested in this than studying.” She found a training position to become a pastry chef and “that was it for me,” says Maria Waffler.

She then gained a wide range of experience in her profession and worked in an ice cream parlor and, until recently, in upscale gastronomy. Then she heard that an operator of the ice cream parlor in Hohenpeißenberg was being sought and at just the right time: “I wanted to get out of the restaurant. I missed making cake.”

Opening hours:

The “Café Eis-Waffler” is open Monday and Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Thursday to Sunday from 1 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. On opening day, Saturday, April 20, 2024, it will be open from 2 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. To mark the opening, the Hohenpeißenberg gospel choir “Joyful People” will give a small concert at the ice cream parlor at 2 p.m.
