“All You Can Eat”: This is how high the prices are estimated to be in cannabis clubs

How much does a gram of weed cost? And is membership worth it over the black market? The price expectations of the growing associations vary.

It will take until July 1st for cannabis clubs to be allowed to begin cultivation. It will probably take longer for members to actually be able to buy their weed there. Nevertheless, since partial legalization, many stoners have been wondering: How much will cannabis cost in the clubs (also called cultivation associations)? We have answers.

Exactly how much cannabis will cost in clubs is still uncertain

For our research into cannabis prices, we contacted various clubs in Germany. The CSC Hamburg, which includes several growing associations, told us that it is currently “unable to make any serious statements” about prices. “No merchant can put a price tag on a future product without having a basis for planning production costs,” says chairman Andreas Gerhold

This doesn't just have to do with the fact that the exact rules for cultivation don't come into force until July 1st. The state authorities also still have to decide which cannabis clubs will actually receive permission to grow.

“The states currently don’t even know which authorities should be responsible for issuing permits, let alone what specific requirements are attached to it. For example, security requirements can still be imposed, which can also be associated with high costs,” says Gerhold.

According to the Cannabis Act (CanG), no fee may be charged for cannabis. Instead, there should be “staggered flat rates” in growing associations. Offering different varieties at different prices might not be possible. “Nobody yet has a concept of how this should work – without offering some kind of 'All You Can Eat subscription',” criticizes the club chairman. The CSC Hamburg is currently examining legal steps.

Estimated prices at cannabis clubs vary by state

According to the Cannabis Price Index 2024, a gram of cannabis in clubs will cost an average of seven euros in the future. However, prices vary depending on the federal state and growing association. At CSC Lübeck,

for example, a gram is expected to cost between four and six euros when asked by

. The CSC Lower Saxony estimates the price per gram to be between seven and twelve euros, the CSC Freiburg at around five euros per gram.

If you want to buy cannabis in a club, you also have to be a member - that also costs money. The annual fee varies between twelve euros (Cannabis Social Club Berlin), 60 euros (Cannabis Social Club Krefeld) and 160 euros (Munich Greeners Club). If you want to get your weed from a cannabis club, you should note that you can receive up to 50 grams of cannabis there per month. This is also the maximum amount that consumers are allowed to have in their own four walls.

Is it cheaper to grow your own or even the black market?

Growing your own weed at home could be financially more worthwhile than cannabis clubs: for private growers, the estimated price according to the cannabis price index is around five euros per gram. That's the equivalent of one euro per joint. However, the cannabis law stipulates that only a maximum of three plants are allowed per person. The returns can also depend on how well you do as a “hobby gardener”.

The “hobby gardeners” also worried a dealer at

. He charges between six and eight euros per gram: This is only partly cheaper than in cannabis clubs, but in any case more expensive than growing it yourself.

By the way, street prices are not so low everywhere, but vary depending on the region. According to the cannabis price index, the price in Munich is an average of 11.65 euros per gram. In Frankfurt, however, you pay an average of 8.23 ​​euros. So where you live could determine whether cannabis clubs end up paying off or not.
