An off-duty police officer shot dead an MDA volunteer/according to Section 27 A of the Copyright Law
A police officer who shot dead Yaakov Tohi in Jaffa yesterday (Friday) was investigated with a warning by the police. On Saturday night, he will be brought to a hearing on the extension of detention at the Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court. The policeman claimed: He tried to stab me, I acted in self-defense.
Upon receiving the report of the shooting last night, investigators of the Police Department went to the scene in Jaffa and began investigating the incident. The suspect policeman was interrogated, and at the end of his investigation he was arrested. The investigation of the case continues. Later, the Police Department allowed to publish the news of the policeman's arrest.
Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai wrote in X that "a serious incident happened in Jaffa last night that should not have happened. Ya'akov Tohi, a respected and well-known resident of Jaffa, a social activist who volunteered in MDA for many years was shot dead in the street. The shooter, a policeman on vacation and a resident of Jaffa himself, confronted Tohi about parties that are currently being investigated by the police. He was arrested and even brought to an extension of detention. I spoke with the police command and it was made clear to me that the investigation of this serious incident will be completed. The residents of Jaffa, like all citizens of the country, are entitled to security when they go out on the street and everywhere."
Huldai added: "I send my condolences to the Tohi family, several of whose sons and daughters are managers and employees in the municipality and I know them personally. I, and the entire municipal system, are with them in their grief and in their difficult hour. The municipality officials accompany the family and the event and will assist in whatever is required. I call on the residents of Jaffa, Arabs and Jews - despite the difficult hour, let's keep the order, let's keep Jaffa."
The police claimed that the materials of the initial investigation show that Flathi stabbed the policeman during a fight that developed between the two, following a dispute on the road, and only then did the policeman shoot in response. Tohi's family members refused to believe the police version. "I strongly doubt this matter," claimed Abed, the shooting victim's cousin. "Yakub is not a violent person and he may have had a taser to protect himself, but I don't believe he stabbed him. They are simply trying to whitewash the investigation and direct it to a version of self-defense. In the videos we see how the policeman is the one who hits Yakov and not the other way around , so where did they get this idea from?". It should be noted that videos documenting the incident were released last night, in which the masked policeman is seen pointing his gun at those present who are shouting at him.
