The winter is too warm, the electricity costs are too high. The Wolfratshauser “Ice Age” was a top-dollar deal last season with a whopping 60,000 euros. Nevertheless, there will be a sequel.

Wolfratshausen - 5,317 people of all ages paid their fee in the 2023/2024 winter season to skate on the artificial ice surface at the old Floßlände or to register for curling. Now the cultural committee has decided on a new edition of “Ice Age”.

Winter too warm for the Wolfratshausen “Ice Age” – high electricity consumption of 41,000 kilowatt hours

“As great as the warm weather was for the river festival in summer, it was just as bad for the Ice Age,” explained Kutter. The mild temperatures were already noticeable when the artificial ice surface was being set up, so more electricity was needed than planned. In total, consumption amounted to 41,000 kilowatt hours. For comparison: In the previous edition in winter 2021/2022 there were “only” 23,000 kilowatt hours. Electricity costs have more than doubled from around 4,600 to 10,100 euros due to price increases.

In addition, operations were temporarily not possible on the first opening weekend in December due to sudden heavy snowfall. Under these suboptimal conditions, it was good that a total of 35 sponsors brought 25,275 euros into the coffers. “There are more and more companies supporting the Ice Age,” said Kutter happily. In this context, he particularly thanked the car dealer Engelbert Stapf, who supported him with the acquisition. Overall, income of around 55,000 euros is offset by high expenses of almost 115,000 euros, resulting in a deficit of 60,000 euros.

The members of the cultural committee headed by Third Mayor Annette Heinloth (Greens) supported the organizer Andreas Kutter. “I’m happy about the ice age and the great external appearance,” said Helmuth Holzheu (Citizens’ Association). Jennifer Layton (Greens) and Manfred Fleischer (Wolfratshauser List) also argued for a continuation. Only Manfred Menke (SPD) denounced the high electricity costs. “The long list of sponsors speaks for the ice age,” he admitted.

The Cultural Committee finally approved a new edition of “Ice Age” in Wolfratshausen with a vote of 9:1

Four weeks later, the cultural committee finally approved a new edition of the ice age with a 9-1 vote, with the requirement that the financial effects of a one-week extension be examined. Only Peter Lobenstein (Greens), who had requested a postponement of the opening date from the first to the third weekend in Advent, voted against it. The budget earmarks 120,000 euros for the Ice Age.
