A storm hit a chairlift in Italy. The seats are thrown through the air like toys. Eyewitnesses captured the scene on video.
Cervinia – A violent storm hit large parts of the Alpine region at the start of the long weekend. In the south of Bavaria there were even warnings of “danger to life and limb”. And in the southern neighboring countries, strong gusts of wind also caused problems. Many ski lifts, for example in Switzerland, closed early. Horrifying videos of a chairlift are now making the rounds from Italy.
The scene is the holiday resort of Cervinia in the Aosta Valley, Italy, which is popular with tourists and has recently changed its name twice. Strong gusts of wind hit the chairlift that takes skiers up to the mountain station on Thursday.
Ski chairlift in Italy hit by strong wind: “Scary”
Videos of the scene are now making the rounds on social media. An English holidaymaker published cell phone recordings of the scene. You can see how chairlift compartments are thrown through the air like children's toys. “That lift in Cervinia (Cretaz) closed just before we got on! Scary! Some people are stuck in the lift and some were clearly damaged by strong gusts,” he captioned the clip.
Italy horror on the chairlift: “Wind gusts of more than 100 km/h”
The weather website Meteo Valle d'Aosta also published footage of the scene via Instagram. This makes it even clearer how violently the lift's seats are caught in the wind. The portal published the press release from Cervino Spa. Accordingly, after heavy snowfall in the morning, “strong wind gusts of more than 100 km/h” suddenly occurred and caused the chairlift to be closed.
“Due to the sudden deterioration in conditions, the lift was already closed to the public and the last passengers reached the mountain station,” it said. “All people on board arrived at their destination without any consequences.”
In fact, on the Meteo Valle d'Aosta you can clearly see that there are still people in one of the seats.

The English tourist then took to Twitter on Friday to provide an update on the situation in Cervinia. The lift was therefore open again. Ten chairs were damaged and removed from the elevator. He also talks about a person who, according to him, jumped or fell out of one of the chairs the day before. She was flown to a hospital by helicopter. However, she was seen walking independently alongside a ski patrol. However, this information is completely unconfirmed.
