He was cleaning the windows of an 84-year-old's house. He then protected the pensioner from serious financial loss. Ilija Matijevic has now been honored for his moral courage.
District
- November 16th last year was initially a normal working day for Ilija Matijevic. He was doing window cleaning work in the house of an 84-year-old pensioner from the Ebersberg district.
While working in the attic, Matijevic noticed that the resident was excitedly talking on the phone. When the woman collected various pieces of jewelry during the phone call and ultimately weighed them on a kitchen scale, Ilija Matijevic suspected that this could be an attempted telephone scam. He had the presence of mind to call the police.
This reported on Thursday, March 28th: When Matijevic explained to the pensioner that she had probably fallen for a scammer, the resident asked him to leave. However, he did not allow himself to be turned away and stayed with the victim until the patrol crew from the Ebersberg police station arrived.
When the officers took up the case, it turned out that the pensioner had received a “shock call” in which it was explained that her daughter had caused a traffic accident and that 70,000 euros had to be made available to prevent her from being taken into custody.
“Mr. Matijevic's courageous intervention and quick action led to the thwarting of this shock call, so that no financial loss occurred to the pensioner's detriment. “In retrospect, the pensioner was happy about Mr. Matijevic’s persistence and thanked him very much,” said the Upper Bavaria-Nord Police Headquarters.
This courage and prudence has now been recognized by the Erding Criminal Police Inspectorate. Ilija Matijevic received a certificate and a monetary donation as a token of gratitude.
Police behavior tips
- It is best to hang up if you are not sure who is calling and you feel pressured.
- The police will never call you on the police emergency number 110! Only scammers do that.
- If you are unsure, dial 110. But do not use the callback button!
- Call the supposedly affected relative on the number you know!
- Never talk about your personal and financial circumstances on the phone.
- Never hand over money to unknown people!
- Call in someone you trust or call the police on the emergency number 110!
- The real police never ask for cash, transfers or valuables from you to conduct investigations!
- Talk to your relatives about the phenomenon and warn them about what the perpetrators are doing!
