In keeping with her farewell, Juze director Christina Annibalini and her successor Basti Kosler recently presented their annual report - and the two were able to draw very positive conclusions. “Apparently the last few years have gone quite well,” said Kosler. Increasingly important, but not visible: consultations.

Schongau – “It was the city council’s wish to report on the work in the youth center outside of the board of trustees meetings,” said Mayor Falk Sluyterman. The Juze team, which includes Fabian Kammerer, was happy to take advantage of this opportunity. Annibalini returned to the most recent board of trustees meeting last October right at the beginning, because it became known that the district would be cutting the 350,000 euros for management positions in the five youth centers from 2025 (we reported). “We are in a bit of a state of flux,” is how she put it. “But we want to underline how important open child and youth work is, that it is much more than just selling specialties and sandwiches – people often don’t know that.”

The outgoing Juze leader and her successor took turns in the report

The two Juze leaders then took turns giving a brief outline of everyday life and events. Whether it's a bar team, working at the Schweinsgalopp circus or U18 elections: the open youth work is broad, says Kosler. It is leisure work as well as project work, exchange with volunteers and extracurricular educational work. The focus is on young people and their interests. For example, four interns from the Rottenbuch Academy recently had the idea of organizing a party - which was also implemented. Last but not least, there are numerous projects that you support or take part in, such as Christopher Street Day, photo projects, the KuKu Festival or “Schongau is colorful”.

“The youth centers have different focuses,” said the outgoing Juze director. As reported, she is changing jobs from April 1st, but remains in Schongau and takes a JaS position at Brücke Oberland, youth social work in schools, namely at the vocational school in Schongau. It is important that everything should take place in project work - you don't want to be rigid, you want to move.

“We have rules, but no clear structures.”

Kosler described it differently. “We have rules, but no clear structures.” During the opening times of the facility, the juze can rotate from top to bottom, “we go along with that.” Very creative things always come out, like the 15-second clips “Did you know…” about Schongau. For example, current questions about the hammer sound are clarified there. “We do what the young people want to do, give impulses and try to be very close to the young people and pick them up.”

However, a large part of the work consists of advice and referrals, as Annibalini added. “Projects can be seen, but consulting activities or crisis intervention are not visible.” On average, there were around four consultations a day. The colleagues in youth social work at schools can only catch what happens in the morning, but they are well networked - "that's why they often forward cases to us." It is important that this task is also seen.

Kosler calculated that they were open on three quarters of the working days and that this was only possible with the support of the intern. “We want to try to be there constantly so that we can conduct consultations in a meaningful way.” The Juze leader emphasized that Schongau plays a special role with 53 percent of female visitors; on the day of the city council meeting there were even significantly more girls. “It’s special and really beautiful, we want to keep it that way.”

Recently there has been a steep increase in visitor numbers

As reported, the number of visitors has recently risen sharply: While there were 6,237 in 2009, 13,107 children and young people came to Juze in 2023, that's twice as many. “You can see how high the demand is, that’s also feedback for us,” says Kosler happily.

“The Juze is an important institution here in Schongau,” says Mayor Sluyterman, thanking the team. During a joint conversation with District Administrator Andrea Jochner-Weiß and Jürgen Wachtler, head of the youth welfare office in the district, it was emphasized that youth work is particularly good in Schongau. The district council has now also sent a signal about how it wants to continue supporting youth work - but only with around a third of the previous amount. Mona Maucher also gave high praise on behalf of the youth speakers. “What we are particularly pleased about is the high proportion of girls. And working together is just a lot of fun.”
