Chairman of the Torah Flag party MK Moshe Gafni said today (Thursday) that "without Torah scholars we have no right to exist in this country." In addition, he said that "after two thousand years of exile, the nation of Israel has returned to being a Jewish nation in its own land, and this is thanks to the Torah scholars who continue the tradition." His words were said against the background of the crisis surrounding the conscription law.

Last night, the state requested a one-day delay in submitting the answer to the High Court on the exemption from conscription, until today at 2:00 p.m. Yesterday, the draft of her answer to Attorney General Gali Beharev Miara, which was submitted for the approval of the Government Secretariat, was leaked. The draft shows that Beharev Miara intends to claim that the state is no longer authorized to avoid recruiting ultra-Orthodox yeshiva students, and that it is entitled to budget for ultra-Orthodox yeshiva. It is also written that the state should start recruiting ultra-Orthodox members from April 1, and prepare for the cessation of allowances for yeshiva.

From the state's response it appears that Rabbi Miara does believe that there is room to allow only a short period of preparation as a transitional provision, during which it will be possible to continue providing the supports to give yeshivas and institutions time to prepare - that is, that the allowances will not be immediately denied.
