Abuse of artificial intelligence (AI), disinformation campaigns and covert influence operations, increase in advanced hybrid threats and authoritarian tendencies linked to digital surveillance. These are some of the emerging threats to cybersecurity that according to the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (Enisa) will have an impact by 2030. "Constant observation and evaluation of current threats and trends are essential to reach a level highest level of cybersecurity," said Enisa executive director Juhan Lepassaar. "This way," he added, "we can better address today's challenges and improve our mitigation plans for years to come."

The one published today by Enisa is an updated list of cyber threats in which the main threat, although decreasing compared to the past in terms of impact and probability, is still the attack on the software supply chain which remains the highest threat . This type of attack, which occurs when a hacker infiltrates a company's system through a partner or third-party vendor that provides software services to that organization, is a side effect of the increasing integration of third-party vendors and partners into the supply chain , which leads to new vulnerabilities.

The increase in threats related to "skills shortages" is significant, climbing the ranking from last to second place. Despite efforts, organizations' desire to develop talent and close the education gap continues to be a cybersecurity concern. Likewise, the increased risks from AI abuse can be seen as an expected outcome of the spread of new technology patterns in our lives and concerns about growing dependence on AI. Finally, among the new entries, Enisa mentions the "exploitation of unpatched and outdated systems within the overloaded cross-sector technological ecosystem" and the "physical impact of natural/environmental interruptions on critical digital infrastructures".
