With “Six” a piece of British history comes to the Deutsches Theater Munich. Henry VIII's wives raise their voices and show that they are more than just the king's (ex-)wives.
Munich - Henry VIII became famous for his unscrupulous love life: the English king married six wives, two of whom he had beheaded. Successful series like “The Tudors” or “Henry VIII” tell the life story of him and his wives - but they are rarely in the spotlight. It's different with the musical “Six”: It premiered on Wednesday evening, March 27th at the Deutsches Theater in Munich. It raises the question of whether the stories of Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard and Catherine Parr, known from non-fiction books, historical novels and films, are really their stories - or whether they are there not much more than marginal figures are pushed back.
Premiere in Munich: Musical about Henry VIII's wives delights audiences
This male-dominated narrative is being questioned and vice versa by the British musical, which is currently completing its first tour of Germany and was already seen in Berlin before the Munich premiere. The six women finally tell their own stories - after first having a competition about which of them King Henry did the most wrong - to show that they are more than just the (ex-)wives.

The musical ends with the interpretation that the infamous monarch did not become so famous because of his break with the Catholic Church (he fell out with the Pope over his first divorce and marriage to Anne Boleyn and then declared himself head of his own, new, Anglican church) – but actually only because of his six wives.
The Munich audience celebrated this humorous and feminist spectacle with great applause and long applause. It will be shown at the Deutsches Theater in the Bavarian capital until April 7th. It will then be performed in Zurich from April 9th to 21st.
