Speed drivers have to be careful: the speed camera marathon starts in April 2024. Although the date is known in advance, numerous drivers are speeded.
Kassel – The speed camera marathon has been running for several years, which is why the campaign will also take place in 2024. The police monitor road traffic in Germany on several days in order to catch one or two drivers speeding. Some people are probably wondering how fast drivers can go without the speed camera going off.
When will the speed camera marathon 2024 take place?
This year, many federal states are again taking part in the speed camera marathon. Last year, Berlin, Bremen and Saarland did not take part in the campaign. Nevertheless, drivers must expect speed cameras across the board.
According to
bussgeldkatalog.org,
the marathon is planned on the following days:
From
April 15th to 21st
Main day should be
Friday,
April 19th
Checks are carried out
from morning to evening
Fortunately, the campaign does not take place during holiday traffic. With the start of the speed camera marathon, the Easter holidays end in almost all federal states - with the exception of Schleswig-Holstein. April 15th is the first day after the school break.
Speed camera marathon 2024: Where are speed cameras used in Germany?
Only five federal states are taking part in both the action week against excessive speed starting on Monday and the focus day next Friday, April 19th, with particularly intensive controls, as a survey by the German Press Agency among interior authorities and state police showed. Six other federal states only take part in one of the two campaigns, five in neither.
Specifically, Berlin, Bremen, Lower Saxony, Saarland and Saxony are not participating. Thuringia, Bavaria and Brandenburg are only taking part in the speed camera marathon on April 19th, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein are only taking part in the so-called Speedweek without a highlight on Friday - although Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is even organizing a whole month of action. Only Saxony-Anhalt, Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse, Hamburg and Baden-Württemberg run the full program.
However, speed cameras are primarily used on streets and intersections, where accidents and speeding occur more frequently. You should also be careful near schools, kindergartens and retirement homes; and not just for the speed camera marathon.
Speed camera marathon: balance from last year
Although the date of the speed camera marathon is known in advance, speeding offenders are still caught by the emergency services again and again. Last year alone, the police in Hesse checked around 205,000 vehicles. Of these, around four percent were traveling too fast.
A driver drove the highest speed in the Lahn-Dill district. The speed limit was 100 km/h on the route; the driver was speeding at 167 kilometers per hour. A driver in Vellmar in the Kassel district was also too fast at 159 km/h instead of the permitted 100 kilometers per hour. However, most of them were just a little too fast and got away with a fine of up to 70 euros, the police said.
Speed camera marathons also take place in other EU countries
But there are also actions against speed offenders in other countries. At the same time, “Roadpol Operation Speed” is taking place in several EU member states, reported the consumer magazine
Chip
. Drivers have to be careful in Spain, France, Italy and Hungary, among others.
Compared to other cities, drivers in Kassel rarely have to expect to be caught speeding. But speed cameras still bring in a lot of money. This is shown by three municipalities in the Kassel district that collected more than 800,000 euros from speed cameras.
