Highlights: Many studies have found that those who stopped using weight loss injections regained weight, and sometimes reached a higher weight. A study conducted in the United States examined whether a ketogenic diet can maintain the weight that patients reached with the help of these injections. Participants who stopped taking agonists GLP-1 only gained about a kilogram on average in their weight. In comparison, those who continued to take the drugs, gained about 2 kilograms on average. Among the majority of participants in both groups, blood sugar levels were below the threshold for diagnosing diabetes.

It started in Hollywood and conquered the entire Western world: more and more people manage to shed many kilos with the help of weight loss injections, which are actually used as a treatment for diabetics.

But these injections work perfectly only when the therapeutic sequence is maintained. Many studies have found that those who stopped using the injections regained weight, and sometimes reached a higher weight.

A study conducted in the United States examined whether a ketogenic diet can maintain the weight that patients reached with the help of these injections. The study followed for a year people with type 2 diabetes who were treated with GLP1 injections (Ozmepic and similar drugs) and stopped taking them.

Vigobi and Ozpic belong to the group of GLP-1 agonist drugs, which reduce appetite and increase insulin release. They are usually prescribed to help people with type 2 diabetes regulate blood sugar and lose weight. However, many experts have assumed that people must stay on the drugs long-term, or they regain the lost weight.

At the Virta Health virtual center, they decided to test the assumption that a ketogenic diet helps manage blood sugar levels and weight in people with type 2 diabetes.

The researchers followed 308 adults from the United States, all with type 2 diabetes, who received nutritional therapy at Virta Health. All used GLP-1 agonists. The participants were advised to follow the ketogenic diet - that is, they were told to eat less than 30 grams of carbohydrates per day (or less than 50 grams if they were vegan) and about 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. They were instructed to eat until they felt full, regardless of the number of calories they consumed. Health coaches and medical professionals were in contact with the study participants as needed. The center monitored the study participants' weight and blood sugar levels.

The study showed that between three and nine months after the study participants began eating according to the rules of the ketogenic diet, About 50% of them stopped using GLP-1 agonists (Ozmepic or Vigobi). All participants continued to follow the ketogenic diet for another year. At this point, the researchers found no significant differences in weight or blood sugar levels between the two groups.

The study's conclusions: People with type 2 diabetes who stop using weight-loss drugs like Ozampic or Vigobi can avoid regaining the pounds they lost if they adopt a ketogenic diet. This finding makes it possible to reexamine the concept that people must take these drugs indefinitely to prevent unwanted weight gain.

"This study indicates that continued treatment with weight loss drugs is not necessary for many people if there is proper control over the diet," says Lavalle Health's

Adina Bacher

, diabetes dietitian and ketogenic diet, author of the book The Ketogenic Diet, member of the National Diabetes Council and former chairman of Atid Association.

"The ketogenic diet proves that it is possible to stop using these drugs and maintain a correct weight and balanced blood sugar results. Also, for people who are unable to use these drugs due to possible side effects, there is a useful and much healthier solution. However, it is important to note that before starting a low-carbohydrate diet, you should consult with your doctor or a dietician, because for diabetics treated with insulin or Jardians-type drugs, the data may cause unwanted side effects such as hypoglycemia or ketoacidosis (levels that are too high of ketones). The study proves the power of nutrition to balance sugar levels and weight."
