"I don't want to scare anyone, but war is no longer a concept of the past. It's real, it already started more than two years ago. The most worrying thing is that any scenario is possible. It's the first time since 1945 that we find ourselves in a situation like that. I know it seems devastating, especially for the younger ones, but we have to mentally get used to the arrival of a new era. It's the pre-war era." Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said this in an interview with the newspapers of the Lena consortium including La Repubblica. "Our main objective must be to protect Ukraine from Russian invasion and to safeguard its independence and integrity. The fate of Ukraine is above all in our hands. I am not referring to Poland or the EU alone, but to the 'entire West,' Tusk said. The interview also addresses the issue of defense spending: "There is no reason why Europeans should not respect a fundamental principle and spend at least 2% of GDP on defence. The starting point is this". On the Italian government, Tusk assures: "Meloni's positive role in Brussels, in the European Council, is widely appreciated". Tusk then makes it clear that he intends to renegotiate the Pact on Migration adopted by the EU: "Unfortunately the Pact is not a good answer to the problems we face in Poland. In our part of Europe, immigration has a different face from that to which we are witnessing the Mediterranean. Today we are again witnessing an operation orchestrated by the Lukashenko regime on the border with Belarus. I will not justify some of the methods used by the Polish border guards, but we cannot be helpless in the face of Putin and Lukashenko."
Romeo (League), Tusk? EU leaders don't fan the flames
"Alongside the right and main objective of protecting Ukraine from the Russian invasion, European leaders have a duty to commit themselves to opening the way for negotiations. The world is burning and reason suggests that instead of fanning the flames we should put out the fires." Thus the leader of the League in the Senate Massimiliano Romeo comments with Affaritaliani.it on the statements of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk to La Repubblica, according to which we are in "a pre-war era".
