Some properties of olive oil could have a positive effect on the brain and thus protect against dementia mortality. A study comes to this conclusion.
More and more people are suffering from dementia these days. However, the condition can be prevented with a healthy lifestyle. Diet, among other things, plays a crucial role. Some foods are said to be able to reduce the risk of dementia. According to scientific findings, this also includes regular consumption of olive oil.

In their study, a team of scientists from Harvard University analyzed the connection between diet and dementia-related deaths using nutritional questionnaires and death certificates, as reported by
Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR)
. The data was collected from more than 90,000 U.S. residents over a period of three decades. Of the participants, a total of 4,749 people died of dementia.
When analyzing the information about the participants' diet, it was ultimately shown that the risk of dementia-related death is around 30 percent lower for people who eat more than half a tablespoon of olive oil per day than for people who never or rarely consume olive oil. In addition, people who replace a teaspoon of mayonnaise or margarine with olive oil every day still have an eight to 14 percent lower risk of dying from dementia.

Olive oil promotes a healthy brain - regardless of other diet
The study found the connection between olive oil and dementia mortality regardless of other diet. The researchers therefore suspect that certain properties of olive oil have a positive effect on the brain. According to first author Anne-Julie Tessier, “some antioxidant compounds in olive oil could cross the blood-brain barrier and possibly have a direct effect on the brain.” It is also possible that olive oil has an indirect influence on brain health by promoting cardiovascular health.
