Key numbers in column “12” on the driver’s license: This is what lies behind the numbers
The last column of the table contains the number 12. Some driving licenses may contain two or three-digit key numbers that symbolize additional information, requirements and restrictions. If it is in the line of a vehicle class, the key number explicitly only applies to the respective vehicle in the line. However, if it is in the last line, the key number applies to all vehicles.
The meanings of the key numbers are regulated by law in Appendix 9 to the Ordinance on the Admission of Persons to Road Traffic. A two-digit key number means that it is valid throughout the EU. However, a three-digit key number only counts for Germany.

A possible key number on the back of the driver's license could be 71, for example. What does she mean? In the regulation, after the key number 71, there is the information: Duplicate of the driving license number ... (EU/UN distinguishing mark, in the case of a third country, e.g. “71.987654321.HR”). If you have a German driving license, it's best to check it more closely. Millions of drivers will have to exchange their driving licenses by 2033. For some years the deadline has already passed. You are no longer allowed to drive without a valid license.
