Garlic can be of great help to orchids in cases of sluggishness, disease and pest infestation. But you should dose this home remedy carefully.

Even though many types of orchids are easy to care for, sometimes something goes wrong: Suddenly there are aphids on the leaves or the plant gets brown spots and looks increasingly miserable. That's no reason to throw them away. With the right dose of garlic, a weakened orchid can become crispy green and healthy again and form new flower shoots.

The effect of garlic on orchids is said to be very diverse. Thanks to its many sulfur compounds (allicin) and essential oils, garlic is effective against viruses, bacteria and fungi - it is also effective on other house plants, for example as a natural fungicide against mildew. Pests such as lice, spider mites or thrips can also be repelled with it. During the growth phase, garlic water is also said to act as a natural fertilizer, as the clove contains, for example, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Many orchid fans praise the fact that the plants produce strong green leaves and numerous flowers again after treatment with the sharp tuber.

, plant doctor René Wadas recommends

dipping weak orchids in a garlic broth for 20 minutes. This is not a miracle cure for dead plants, but it promotes recovery if orchids are still salvageable.

  • Roughly chop three cloves of garlic including the peel.

The garlic water can now be used as a dipping bath or poured into a spray bottle and used against pests every few days. According to

    Deavita.com,

    you should

not overdo the treatment with garlic water, as too much of the sulfur substances can inhibit the growth of the orchids.

It's even easier to add a peeled garlic clove to the orchid's pot to improve the root system, stimulate growth and encourage new shoots to form. When treating garlic, the plant will not recover from one day to the next; with a little patience, depending on the condition of the orchid, it can take a few months until the desired result occurs. If you have a beautiful orchid, despite the possible odor, it might be worth a try instead of throwing the plant away.
