These illegal gold prospectors, mainly from Brazil, are destroying the Guyanese forest. Visiting the French Amazon, Emmanuel Macron spoke out in favor of a “legal gold panning” sector in Guyana “in certain places” to fight against the gold rush which is devastating the territory.
The idea? “Structure a sector that does not use mercury, which is exemplary in this area”. Occupying the richest veins could, according to him, avoid “attracting illegal gold miners there” or at least “reducing their activity”.
