Carlos Julio Rojas was accused on Monday of being “instigator” and “logistical operator” of an alleged attempt to assassinate Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. The prosecutor's office links Rojas to an alleged assassination attempt that saw the arrest of two members of Vente Venezuela, the political party of opposition leader Maria Corina Machado.

On March 25, during his candidacy for the National Electoral Council (CNE), Nicolas Maduro denounced a plot against him. Seven members of Machado's campaign team have been arrested in recent weeks and seven others, who took refuge at the Argentine embassy residence, are the subject of an arrest warrant. To date, there are 269 “political prisoners” in Venezuela, according to the NGO Foro Penal, which says the persecution is “intensifying in Venezuela’s capital, Caracas’“. The last public appearance of Rojas, a figure of his neighborhood association in Caracas, dates back to Easter week, when he organized the public burning of dolls representing President Maduro.
