The US blocked with a veto the draft UN Security Council resolution recommending Palestine's full membership of the United Nations. The text obtained 12 votes in favor (Algeria, Russia, China, France, Guyana, Sierra Leone, Mozambique, Slovenia, Malta, Ecuador, South Korea, Japan), 2 abstentions (Great Britain and Switzerland), and no from the United States.

The very short draft presented by Algeria "recommends to the General Assembly that the state of Palestine be admitted as a member of the UN" To be fully admitted, Palestine had to obtain a positive recommendation from the Security Council (with nine yes votes and no vetoes) and then be approved by the General assembly by a two-thirds majority.
