TikTok is rolling out a new service to pay users who watch videos. The EU calls on the social network to respond to the request.

The new service has a feature aimed at users aged 18 and over: the "Rewards Program." The European Commission now plays the role of digital policeman in the EU, and has the power to control and sanction offenders. This is a first step in a procedure that could lead to the opening of a formal investigation and ultimately to heavy financial sanctions in the event of proven breaches of the regulations, the Commission said. The procedure launched on Wednesday is not the first concerning TikTok. It has imposed reinforced rules on 22 very large internet players, including TikTok, since last year to guarantee user security. The European executive explains that it requested "details on the risk assessment" that the network, owned by the Chinese group Byte Dance, "should have carried out before deploying the new TikTok Lite application in France and Spain."
