Zero-emission geothermal energy can generate 10% of Italian electricity production by 2050. In Italy, the geothermal network has 44 projects under development for over 800 MWe of installable electrical power.

However, no plant has been built due to the complex authorization procedures and the lack of adequate support policies for the development of this type of project. Italy's national energy plans do not focus on this technology while the EU is considering geothermalenergy as a strategic technology for decarbonization and aims to triple production by 2030. The European House-Ambrosetti presented a study on the potential of geothermal power in Italy today. The study was promoted by Rete geotermica, the association of companies in the sector, in collaboration with the European House-Ambro settlingi and presented today in Rome. It is based on a study published by the journal Geothermal Energy and the European Institute of Geothermal Research (IEG) (http://www.ieg.org/news/features/geothermal-energy-and-renewable-power-in-italy-2040.html).
