A change to the vehicle registration regulations has been in force since July 1, 2012. This makes it possible for vehicle owners to register two vehicles with one changeable license plate.

The so-called interchangeable license plate consists of two parts. The front (longer) part may only be attached and used on one of the two vehicles that are registered together. This smaller part of the license plate always remains attached to the respective vehicle. A variable license plate may be used for the following vehicle classes (source: ADAC): Class M1: Motor vehicles. Class M2: Car and motorcycle vehicles. class M3: Truck and trailer vehicles. Class M4: Car, motorcycle and truck vehicles. classes M5 and M6: Truck, motorcycle, trailer, car and tractor vehicles. class M7: Car & motorcycle vehicles, truck and trailer, vehicle registration office. class C1: Car registration office, car or motorcycle. class B: Car or motorcycle registration office,. class C: Truck or trailer, state or federal state.
