Against this background, this week Deputy Minister of Transportation Uri Makalev (Torah Judaism) visited Israel, met with the management of El Al and its employees. And what did Makalev deal with them? According to the announcement he made about the visit, as published in the Yedd Na'aman party website, not exactly with problems which are now troubling many Israelis and tourists.
In his meeting with El Al chairman Amikam ben Zvi Haela Makleb, the rabbis' demand to reduce the problem of priestly impurity: the ban on priests being near dead people who are not their relatives. El Al, like other airlines, sometimes flies to Israel the bodies of Israelis who died abroad, and of Jews who asked to be buried in Israel, and the procedure is to take the body off the plane even before it is attached to the sleeve at the airport, to prevent the impurity from transferring to the sleeve itself.

Ben Tzvi explained to Makalev that the problem exists not only in El Al's territories or its planes, but in all the territories of Israel, and that in everything related to the planes under its responsibility the company is making a great effort to solve the problem.
At the end, Makalev congratulated El Al for refusing to fly on Shabbat, saying that Shabbat stands for the success of those who keep it," and promised that he and his team will continue to accompany the activity to reduce the problem of impurity.
The Makleb office responded that "the information is incorrect and that the main part of the visit and the majority of the discussion revolved around the issue of flight prices and the lack of competition in the market at this time."
