In Perthus (Pyrénées-Orientales), this Friday March 29, the announcement of the government decree which puts an end to the limits on the importation of cigarettes from a country of the European Union has not yet made the rounds. Here in the Las Limites district, the Spanish part of the city, cigarettes cost almost two and a half times less than on the other side of the border. “I take Marlboros at 4.70 euros per pack compared to 11 euros in France. It’s a big saving in the end,” admits Solange, 72 years old.
Arriving by coach with the Pézenas retirees' club (Hérault), she leaves with three cartridges under her arm and not one more despite the end of the limitations introduced a few hours earlier. “This corresponds to my consumption and it already represents a significant sum for me: 148 euros”.
