Europe is thinking big for hydrogen, but its ambitions risk falling short. However, various texts dedicated to the energy transition make it a cornerstone of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from industry and transport. Perfect for decarbonizing transport and heavy industry, this gas has all the virtues. At least on paper. To the point that the Twenty-Seven have announced the objective of producing 10 million tonnes of “green” hydrogen and importing the same amount by 2030, for a total of 20 million tonnes. The reality could be very different, due to a lack of sufficient production capacity and adequate demand.
A study carried out by the CEA draws a very different observation: demand would stand at 2.5 million tonnes in 2030 and 9 million in 2040.
