Japan: a 6.3 magnitude earthquake hits the southwest of the archipelago

Several hundred people also died after an earthquake on January 1 in the Noto peninsula, at the northern tip of Ishikawa department. The tremor occurred after a very violent earthquake near Taiwan, which left nine dead and more than 1,000 injured on the island, as well as extensive material damage.


No tsunami warning was issued for the quake, and no damage was reported.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located in a channel that separates the islands of Kyushu and Shikoku, about 18 km west of Uwajima, at a depth of about 25 km, the USGS said.
