Volvo has finally said goodbye to diesel. The last XC90 comes to the company museum. This is just the beginning of achieving an ambitious goal.

Anyone who buys a car today is spoiled for choice when it comes to power: petrol, diesel, gas, hydrogen or electricity? At least for the majority of manufacturers. At Volvo the selection is no longer that big. The Swedes only offer gasoline engines, plug-in hybrids or purely electric cars. Volvo has retired the diesel.

Volvo had already announced the project in autumn 2023. In February 2024, the last Volvo V60 with a diesel engine rolled off the assembly line in Ghent, Belgium. In March, the last XC90 with a diesel engine left the factory in Torslanda, Sweden. It was the last diesel-powered vehicle.

Last Volvo built with diesel: XC90 becomes an exhibition piece

However, the XC90 will not be delivered to a customer. Instead, the SUV is taken to Gothenburg. There it will document the end of the diesel era as an exhibit in the World of Volvo, the car manufacturer's museum.

This started in 1979 when the Swedes brought their first model with a diesel engine onto the market. The Volvo 244 GL D6 came at a time when diesel was very popular with taxi and long-distance drivers. Over the years that would change. Volvo relies on electric cars: climate neutral by 2040

But with the diesel scandal at VW in 2015, the popularity of this type of engine declined. Due to the fraud in emissions tests and allegations against more and more manufacturers, the diesel's image changed overnight from being a clean man to being a climate killer. At Volvo, the proportion of diesel engines was recently only marginal.

The Swedes see the future in electric cars. The aim is to achieve net zero emissions by 2040. All models should be electrified by 2030. There will then be no more combustion engines. Volvo boss Jim Rowan even warned the competition not to take too much time making the switch. And success proves him right. In 2023, the Swedes increased sales of electric cars by 70 percent. The company's global market share of electric vehicles increased by 34 percent.
