Ice-cold onset of winter in Bavaria – DWD warns of “persistent snowfall”

2024-04-20T11:02:30.248Z

Frosty winter instead of summery spring – that is the motto these days in Bavaria. Even at the weekend there is no improvement in sight.

Update from April 20th, 11:45 a.m

.: While it will mainly be cold rain and sleet in the Bavarian lowlands on Saturday morning, the Free State is a real winter wonderland in the higher altitudes. According to reports, the winter service on the Großer Arber is in constant use; from around 900 meters above sea level there is 30 to 40 centimeters of wet fresh snow. A huge burden for the trees; without winter equipment there is no way through there.

First report from April 20th:

Munich - Lots of rain and even snow in Munich on Thursday morning - the weather in Bavaria experienced a sharp drop compared to last weekend, when there were still temperatures towards the 30 degree mark. Especially at the big flea market on Munich's Theresienwiese, people hoped for an improvement in the weather - in vain, as it now turns out.

Winter weekend in Bavaria – snow and rain instead of sun and blue sky

The schedule for the weekend, as is clear from the weather report from the German Weather Service (DWD), is likely to cause disillusionment among sun fans: “Repeated showers, sometimes even deeper than snow, in the Alps and initially also in the higher Bavarian Forest Snowfall. Individual thunderstorms from midday onwards,” write the meteorologists. Meanwhile, bitter cold and snow are also spreading in northern Germany.

After all: on Saturday morning, April 20th, the warning map from the German Weather Service was largely in the green zone throughout the entire Free State. However, there are striking weather warnings on the edge of the Alps. The DWD warns of snowfall there. “In the warning period above 800 m snowfall occurs with amounts between 20 cm and 40 centimeters. In storage areas, quantities of up to 60 centimeters can be achieved. The snow line falls to low altitudes. It spreads smoothly.”

A similar warning applies to the extreme east of Bavaria: “In the warning period, snowfall with amounts between 10 cm and 20 cm occurs above 1000 m. Amounts of up to 30 cm can be achieved in storage areas. “It’s spreading smoothly,” it says for the east of the Regen, Freyung and Cham districts.

Bright spot on Sunday – but before that there was still decent winter weather

Over the course of Saturday and the night of Sunday, April 21st, widespread rain, sleet and snowfall will alternate in Bavaria. In some cases the snowfall limit drops to lower altitudes, writes the DWD. This news is likely to cause disillusionment, especially among fans of bargains, junk and dealers - because in this weather it is not so pleasant to stroll through the large flea market on Munich's Theresienwiese.

There will be a small ray of hope on Sunday, because then the bad weather will retreat somewhat towards the afternoon, writes the German Weather Service: “On Sunday there will be further rain or snow showers as well as individual thunderstorms, moving back towards the Alps and towards Swabia towards the evening. In parts of eastern Bavaria, probably dry and periods of sunshine from the afternoon onwards. Maximum 4 to 9 degrees. Weak to moderate, at times slightly freshening north-easterly winds.”

With cold highs of around eleven degrees and mixed with rain, snow and thunderstorms again from the afternoon at the latest, Monday, April 22nd, shows that the bad weather phase in Bavaria is not over for the time being. In fact, temperatures are not expected to become warm again until the end of April.
