The weather in April does whatever it wants. While icy polar air brings winter temperatures back to Germany, the warmth is already just around the corner.
Munich – After an unusually warm start to April, there are now signs of an abrupt change in the weather. The German Weather Service (DWD) even warned of a possible onset of winter and snowfall. Weather in Germany: “Much too warm” April is cooled down by polar air
Polar air floods Germany. According to Jung, April “completely changed its face.” On Saturday (April 20th) the summer temperatures have disappeared and icy polar air dominates the weather. The weather expert describes the forecasts for the coming days as a “weather map of horror”.
Jung is referring to a high-altitude weather map that shows temperatures at an altitude of 5.5 kilometers above Germany. “It's measured up to -35 degrees. “That’s neat,” he explains. It also gets significantly cooler on the ground with a maximum of 12 degrees. The expert predicts showers, sleet thunderstorms and, at altitudes above 500 meters, even sleet or snow.

The deepest point of the “cold air bowl,” as Jung calls it, is expected on Sunday (April 21). “At least at high altitudes, and at the weekend also in the deep layers of the ground,” said the expert. April has been anything but cold so far. “The first 15 days of the month were far too warm. We were extremely spoiled. In some regions there were more than 5 summer days, plus one hot day,” recalls Jung. With an average temperature of 11.5 degrees, April 2024 (as of April 19) is 3.6 degrees above the average for the years 1991 to 2020.

But when will spring weather return? Jung initially expects the cold spell to continue next weekend. Last Thursday (April 18th) he said: “However, it currently looks as if we will no longer get 20 degrees or more for the rest of April. “Certainly not 25 degrees.”
But as April has already shown, the weather can change quickly. According to the calculations of the two leading weather models, GFS and ECMWF, the forecast has already changed again. Jung gives hope and explains that “it will be significantly warmer again next weekend”. He calls this view “weather maps of hope.”

For the last week of April and the beginning of May, Jung sees continued changeable weather, but with rising temperatures. “The first week of May is still a bit in the balance, but there are already signs of significant temperature increases,” said the meteorologist. He adds: “It’s time to get out of the cool valley.”
