Highlights: A military tombstone was placed on the temporary grave of Alon Shamriz, who was accidentally killed by the IDF while trying to escape from Hamas captivity. The tombstone placed on Alon's grave has no personal number and rank, so it is more of a gesture on behalf of the army than recognition by the state of it as part of the IDF. Despite the headstone that was installed on his grave, the state's insistence on not recognizing Elon as an IDF soldier prevents the family from fully belonging to the family of the bereaved parents who are recognized as IDF soldiers. The family is awaiting the Supreme Court's ruling on the petition it filed for Alon to be recognized as a deserter. The state's recognition of Alon as a space is only symbolic, without economic consequences for the state, since Alon is already recognized as an area affected by hostilities. The placement of the tombstone comes after many months in which Alon's family has been fighting to be recognized as an Israeli soldier.

The family of Alon Shamriz, who was accidentally killed by the IDF while escaping from captivity, has been fighting for several months for their son to be recognized as an IDF soldier - despite the army's opposition. After many discussions on the subject, the placement of the tombstone was proposed as a kind of compromise, but without ranks and personal number. "An action of appearance and not of essence, gives no relief to the pain"

A military tombstone was placed today (Thursday) on the temporary grave of Alon Shamriz, who was accidentally killed by the IDF while trying to escape from Hamas captivity. The placing of the tombstone comes after many months in which Alon's family has been fighting to be recognized as an IDF soldier. His family claims that Alon should be recognized as an IDF deserter due to the fact that he was issued a reserve order on the day he was kidnapped, and that he used the skills he learned in his service as an engineering soldier to rescue himself, Yotam Haim, and Samer Talaka from their captors.

The tombstone placed on Alon's grave has no personal number and rank, so it is more of a gesture on behalf of the army than recognition by the state of it as part of the IDF. Although this was done with the coordination and approval of the family, it does not diminish their insistence that it be recognized as an IDF space officially.

The state's recognition of Alon as a space is only symbolic, without economic consequences for the state, since Alon is already recognized as a space affected by hostilities. Despite the headstone that was installed on his grave, the state's insistence on not recognizing Elon as an IDF soldier prevents the family from fully belonging to the family of the bereaved parents who are recognized as IDF soldiers.

Because of this, on the days of remembrance there will not be a representative of the IDF in front of Alon's grave, they will not be allowed to take part in the military ceremonies and more. In light of the state's insistence, and the formalist position they expressed and unlike many other cases presented to the High Court, the family is awaiting the Supreme Court's ruling on the petition it filed .

Avi Shamriz, Alon's father said that "We thank the army for the decision to place a tombstone that looks like a military tombstone on the grave of our Alon. But unfortunately, the army has not yet agreed to commit that the committee that will be established by the Chief of Staff will also discuss the status of Alon, and others fall. Without the recognition of the oak, placing the tombstone is not enough."

Attorney Ran Cohen Rochbarger, the family's attorney, said that "I welcome the fact that the army granted the family's request, and following the clear recommendations of the High Court, will eventually place a military monument on Alon's grave, but the complete answer to the bereaved family will only be received after recognition Balon as someone who was a soldier and was killed as an IDF soldier."

At the end of March, the hearing began on the Shamriz family's petition regarding the recognition of Alon as an IDF soldier. After a discussion behind closed doors, the state announced that it would ask to inform the court whether it would offer a compromise outline on the issue, which arrived today in the form of the military tombstone.
