This is how waste paper disposal works in the district

2024-04-17T04:28:20.189Z

Highlights: Waste paper accounts for 834,000 euros per year in the fee budget of the Erdinger Land district. More than 9,000 tons of recyclable material are produced every year. The quality of waste paper has changed over the years, recently with greater dynamics. Neumaier wants to have more press containers set up, because packaging in particular is often very voluminous but weighs little - unlike the catalog from the mail order company. The order from the Vienna company Bunzl & Biach begins there. It takes care of removal and recycling in Linz and Rosenheim. It is divided into two lots. One of them was recently secured by the Heinz company from Moosburg. They set up the collection containers and take the contents to a collection point. They are waiting for delivery at the 31 recycling centers and the 100 publicly accessible parking spaces. The price of paper is not particularly high at the moment, but it is a lucrative market. The district council estimates the profits at 707,000 euros.

Do you know how waste paper disposal works in the Erding district? We explain!

Erding – “This is one of our big ones.” With these words, Andreas Neumaier gave the district council’s environmental committee a look through the keyhole at a detail of recycling in Erdinger Land. The head of waste management was referring to the collection and recycling contracts for waste paper. They have to be put out to tender again, even across Europe because of their volume. A good opportunity to take a closer look at the waste paper collected in Erdinger Land.

According to Neumaier – digitalization or not – around 9,000 tons of the recyclable material are produced every year. Most recently, more than 3,500 tons were brought to the containers, and over 5,000 tons ended up in the blue bins. However, the quality of the waste paper has changed over the years, recently with greater dynamics. “The source catalog is missing,” he said with a wink. The head of waste management meant: The higher quality and heavier papers are decreasing, but more and more cardboard boxes from the mail order business are ending up in paper bins and containers.

They also deserve a closer look. Neumaier reported that almost 29,000 tons of paper were issued in the district. “That corresponds to a connection rate of almost 72 percent.”

275 containers are waiting for delivery at the 31 recycling centers and the 100 publicly accessible parking spaces. Neumaier wants to have more press containers set up, because packaging in particular is often very voluminous but weighs little - unlike the catalog from the mail order company.

And that's how it works with disposal. According to Neumaier, it is divided into two lots. One of them was recently secured by the Heinz company from Moosburg. They set up the collection containers and take the contents to a collection point. The order from the Vienna company Bunzl & Biach begins there. It takes care of removal and recycling in Linz and Rosenheim.

As is well known, waste is a lucrative market: waste paper accounts for 834,000 euros per year in the fee budget. Neumaier estimated the proceeds at 707,000 euros. “The price of paper is not particularly high at the moment,” he added by way of explanation. 127,000 euros must be taken from the garbage fees.

According to Neumaier, the dual systems – packaging – are responsible for a good third of the paper waste. “Nine out of ten providers have delegated this to us, only one collects and processes it themselves,” he reports. Here, costs of over 900,000 euros per year are offset by revenues of 360,000 euros. According to the committee's decision, the fourth largest disposal contract will now be put out to tender. The new contracts apply from July 1, 2025. Short distances to the nearest branch are part of the tender for service reasons.

This date also applies to another, much smaller disposal order – that for used clothing. Here too, according to Neumaier, a new tender is necessary. It's about 650 tons of old clothes and shoes that are collected every year at recycling centers and container sites. Here, 153,000 euros in costs are offset by 195,000 euros in revenue. ham
