Holidaymakers repeatedly report real “towel wars” at the hotel pool. A woman reports on her own trick for securing a lounger.

When it comes to the best loungers at the hotel pool, everyone's elbows are out on holiday. Especially in Mallorca, it is often reported that the chairs are completely occupied in the early hours of the morning - or at least there are towels or slippers on them to signal that this seat is taken. If you want to get a lounger there, you have to think of something special. In the summer of 2023, a TikTok user reveals her trick to never leave empty-handed.

Woman shows on TikTok how she gets to a lounger at the hotel pool every day

While the hotel guests fight over the best spots at the pool during the day, the area is yawning empty in the evenings or at night. The user Harriet, alias “harriets_crazy_life”, takes advantage of this. “11 p.m., all sunbeds are free,” says a video she posted on the platform. “11:01 p.m., my towels are on my loungers.”

This means that she fills her desired seats the evening before instead of getting up at the crack of dawn and hoping that others are slower. The video itself is from 2021, but British media picked it up again. In total it was viewed over 320,000 times. And this year it is again more than relevant.

Towel arguments are getting weirder and weirder

Recently in Mallorca it happened that hotel guests with their towels formed a kind of queue in front of the exits to the pool - because this area was closed overnight. This was to ensure that they were admitted in that order and were able to choose a lounger.

The comments under Harriet's video show mixed views on such methods. While some celebrate her for her trick, others have no understanding for it: “That makes me angry,” they say, for example. Others have already thought of a countermeasure: “I just put the towels away in the morning when the loungers are not in use,” writes one person. Another reports: "My father used to hide crabs in people's towels when they put them on the loungers too early."

This also raises the question - can the loungers at the hotel pool be reserved at all - or should everyone have the same chance of a place in the cool water? Nadja Hettich, who works as a lawyer at the Germany Hotel Association, explained, according to the online portal

, that the hotels themselves decide whether to set rules in this regard. House rules apply here. However, decency dictates that hotel loungers are not reserved, as etiquette consultant Karin Schleines believes, according to the report: “I don't think that's nice to other holidaymakers. If the hotel says: 'Don't reserve loungers', then you should avoid that as much as possible!” But it can't always be prevented, especially if the hotel doesn't have any rules in this regard. However, employees often put away towels themselves if the lounger has not been used for a long time.
