In May, spring is in full swing. There are flowers everywhere and the weather is turning summery. Can the holidays be spent in sunshine and warmth in the green garden? Or will the weather in Germany be icy cold in May because of the Ice Saints? The 100-year calendar predicts what the weather will be like in spring. But it goes even more precisely: He also predicts what the temperatures will be like on the ice saints, who are also called strict gentlemen, ice men and May frosts.

The “100-year calendar” dates from the end of the 19th century and was written by an abbot, Mauritius Knauer. The weather calendar is based on the assumption that the constellation of the planets influences the weather. Each year is assigned a planet to which certain weather conditions are attributed. The centenary calendar combines astrological principles with observations and experiences from agriculture. In addition to the weather forecast, it also contains cultivation tips and warns of possible pests and pests.

The Ice Saints are an important guide when planting, especially for hobby gardeners. In May, people not only spend more time in the fresh air, enjoy the first asparagus of the year and look forward to summer. They also prepare fields, ornamental gardens, orchards and kitchen gardens for a productive season. People often look for the Ice Saints in a particular year. However, the date remains unchanged every year. Only the temperatures fluctuate. According to the “100-year calendar”, it will be cold on the following days and the Ice Saints will move over Germany:
May 11: Mamertus, Bishop of Vienne

May 13: Servatius, Bishop of Tongeren

May 15: Sophia, early Christian martyr and mother of three consecrated virgins
However, there are regional differences. Not all Ice Saints take place everywhere. Some regions have their own ice saints and therefore sooner or later frost, cold and temperatures below freezing. For example, there is another ice saint in northern Germany. Mamertus, Bishop of Vienna, is only found in northern Germany. Cold Sophie, also known as Sophia or Martyr, is only important for southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland. This day marks the end of the Ice Saints. But is there really frost, hail, snow and bitter cold on the ice cream days in May?

100-year calendar with weather forecast: This is how cold it gets on the Ice Saints
From a meteorological point of view, a cold snap usually occurs around May 23rd, as “Weather-Alarm” writes. But the “100-year calendar” writes that this temporal shift can be explained by a calendar change – the so-called Gregorian calendar reform from the 16th century. The Ice Saints originally followed the Julian calendar, which was replaced by the Gregorian calendar in the 16th century. This resulted in a delay of 10 days. Therefore, in our current calendar, Cold Sophie should strictly take place on May 25th, instead of May 15th. The same goes for the other Ice Saints. If you follow the calendar very carefully, you would have to expect the Ice Saints every 10 days later in May.
According to the farmers' calendar, the Ice Saints could actually invade Germany in 2024. The first half of May is expected to be mixed this year, but mostly warm. The 100-year calendar also makes a holiday forecast for May 1st. Towards the end of the month, around the time of the Ice Saints, it is supposed to get cooler and sometimes even frosty again. Especially on May 24th it will be frosty cold in the morning. For the period from May 4th to 15th, the weather calendar predicts warmer but still mixed weather with some rain and occasional thunderstorms.
The centenary calendar says nothing about whether and when the Ice Saints will bring frost and cold in 2024. So it's just a matter of waiting. Since the weather calendar is not scientifically proven, it can only serve as a suggestion and rough weather orientation. But the weather calendar also makes a clear forecast for the weather in Germany in 2024 - that's what the year will be like.
