Depression is as individual as the people who experience it. Although sick leave helps some sufferers, it does not always guarantee relief.
Anyone suffering from depression usually suffers from typical symptoms: According to the
German Depression Aid and Suicide Prevention Foundation,
these include , for example, low mood, lack of motivation, reduced self-esteem or sleep disorders. However, the symptoms can vary greatly from patient to patient. For example, there are significant differences between men and women who suffer from depression.
During a depressive phase, those affected often find it difficult to carry out their everyday tasks and work. A doctor's sick note then quickly seems like the next step. However, there are also cases in which depressed patients can actually benefit from going to work. According to the
patient-information.de portal (
a service commissioned by the German Medical Association and the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians), this depends on the respective personal situation.
Depression: When does it make sense to take sick leave – and when doesn’t it?

According to
patienten-information.de
, a sick note can make sense if depression affects your professional life. For example, some depressed people find it difficult to get up to go to work in the morning. They also feel worthless, have little self-confidence or even have problems concentrating on things. In these cases, the job can become an additional burden and hinder the recovery process. Depending on how openly those affected deal with their illness at work, fears of exclusion or professional disadvantages may arise. In addition, factors such as bullying, stress or constant overwhelm can worsen depression.
Are you depressed? With telephone pastoral care you can get help around the clock - every day of the year: call 0800 1110111 or 0800 1110222. The call is free of charge. Your phone number will not be transmitted and you do not have to say your name. The conversation lasts as long as necessary.
On the other hand, however, work can give people structure and a sense of security because there is a regular income. Work can have a positive effect on mental health and even improve mental well-being. Especially with depressed people, a regular daily routine is often lost. This is exactly why a permanent job can be helpful. Self-efficacy can also be promoted: work can give you the feeling of contributing to something and achieving something using your own strength. In addition, if you are depressed, it is often helpful to maintain contact with other people. The workplace in particular is usually a good place to meet people and not to completely withdraw. This can sometimes prevent loneliness. Some depressed people feel worse when they don't work.

Alleviate depression: Sick leave does not replace treatment
However, a sick note alone does not help against depression. As a person affected, you should therefore discuss with your doctor what type of treatment or therapy can alleviate your symptoms. A combination of antidepressants and psychotherapy is often recommended for depression.
